CHP timing: the 12-month and 6-month windows

Booking the class at the wrong time can mean a certificate the sheriff will not accept. Here is the rule.

El Paso and Douglas County only accept CHP training completed within a set window before you submit it.

• Initial CHP training is good for 1 year. Take the class within a year of applying for your permit.
• Refresher (Renewal) training is good for 6 months. Take it within six months of your current permit's expiration date.

Training completed earlier than that may not be honored. Our CHP journey checks your window before it lets you book — and if you are early, it sets a reminder for the month your window opens instead.
